16 Years a Glutton

The first Christmas Mark and I were together I bought him an expensive set of kitchen knives. That was very bold of me considering I already knew that sometimes when we would watch a movie or television show that featured a black man getting fucked over, Mark would take it out on the nearest white man. That would usually be me. On one of our trips to  Chicago by car, we listened to The Help by Kathryn Stockett. When we got to Chicago The Help movie was playing so we went to see it. For the rest of that week I avoided eating any dish Mark served me that was the color brown. Then there was the movie Django Unchained. All through that movie I worried, until the end. Luckily for me Django killed all the bad white guys. It was cathartic. Now I am in the middle of reading 12 Years a Slave. A true story about a free, American black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. So far it is a story of such horrifying atrocities, and such inhumanity, that even I want to kill whitey. I'm reading the book ahead of our seeing the movie, which I know is inevitable, so I know just how angry it will make Mark. Like I said, I am only four chapters into it, and it is truly upsetting. Not so upsetting though, that I will have to hide those expensive knives I bought Mark. After all, I do have to eat, and many a great meal was prepared with those knives.

  1. I want to read that book before I see the movie too. I heard both are great. Careful when you and Mark go.

  2. I can't think of anything witty to say. I just got back from a Caribbean vacation and it's snowing three times this week. I know reading 12 Years a Slave will put me over the edge...

  3. Of course not Hostess, wittiness and humor comes from bitterness and hatred of your lot in life. After a week in the Caribbean you're too happy and relaxed. I'm sure a little winter weather, and a couple of people giving you the finger in traffic will bring back the Hostess we know and love.
