The other day, WGN the 'Super Station' from Chicago, had a retrospective of their sixty years on the air. I am fifty eight years old, so that means I have watched that television station for most of it's existence. In my mind WGN had some of the best shows on television when I was a child, so it was with great anticipation that I tuned in to watch their special. Unfortunately, all the special did was shatter my memories. Every single television show that I remembered, seemed extremely lame on second viewing. Garfield Goose, was no more than a sock with a plastic beak sewn onto it, and Frazier Thomas, the shows host was just a fat man who talked while the sock puppet, made a clacking noise back. My favorite show, 'The Three Stooges', was hosted by an old guy named Andy Starr, and I remembered that he was almost as funny as the Stooges themselves. When viewed again as an adult he seemed lame, in fact the Three Stooges viewed as an adult seem lame. Probably the reason I considered those shows to be so entertaining is that I was only a kid and easily amused.
It makes me wonder what kids are watching now. Is their television vastly superior to what I watched? Spongebob Squarepants, Snork, and Squirrel boy don't sound all that entertaining, but I guess when your brain is still ninety percent silly putty, they seem brilliant.
It is gratifying to know that when you grow into adulthood your tastes become so much more refined. We have 'Turner Classic' Movies, 'The Fine Living Channel' and other informative and uplifting television to turn to now. I can spend my television viewing time learning from the 'History Channel', or the 'DIY' (Do It Yourself) channel. The list is long of available, decent, intelligent programming. In fact I think I'll go watch some right now. If I hurry I can still catch the last half hour of Ren and Stimpy.

I wouldn't trade the shows of our youth for any of the 30 minute commercials that kids today watch. All they want to do is sell these kids their crap. I still loved Elmer the Elephant, Uncle Johnny Coons, Garfield Goose and all the other silly shows we watched. Life was much simpler back then and much safer.
ReplyDeleteOh, the good old days when you could leave your doors unlocked and knew everyone on your block and called them Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so.
Ahhhhh yes, the 3 Stooges (plus 2 if I remember right....you and Dave!) I absolutely HATED them and their antics. Apparently I had a much more refined taste at a young age than my brothers did!
ReplyDeleteAlan, do you remember going to the show that had Princess Summer-Winter-Spring-Fall (or something like that)? We sat in the Peanut Gallery..........
I loved Ren and Stimpy Alan !!! I never heard of snork though? What is it ?
ReplyDeleteIt was Princess Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring and her father was Chief Thunder-thud. Who could forget the Howdy Doody show with Buffalo Bob.
ReplyDelete@Dennis, I think you were confused. They were calling you a so-and-so.
ReplyDelete@Peggy, That was Super Circus, and NO I was not allowed to go because Dad said I was too young. I stayed at Grandmas house and watched it on television that day. It scarred me for life.
@NTSH, Snork, I don't really know. It's just the name of some show on Disney or Nickelodeon that I see as I surf past.
Mary Hartline and Claud Kirchner were the stars of Super Circus. Mike Wallace of 60 minutes fame was also a part of that show. Think I watched too much TV as a kid?
ReplyDeleteI was never a three stooge fan until adulthood when Alan, Dennis, and Garet came along.
ReplyDeleteThanks Curly Joe Schroder.
ReplyDeleteDennis: Was Television invented yet when you were young? :-O
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember the tv show called "The Blue Fairy" or "Tree Top House?"
ReplyDeleteI can still watch Leave it To Beaver or the Beverly Hillbillies and see episodes I have never seen before. It's great!
ReplyDeleteAnd Garet watches those show without even owning a television. It must be those old fillings.
ReplyDeleteI think Peggy (Margaret Mary)is wrong.I think her younger brother, Alan, did watch the three stooges and attempted many of their antics. However, her next younger brother(remember photo Friday oldest woman in the world) was more sophisticated than that and watched only Laurel and Hardy. After Peggy returned from Super Circus she would only sit on a "sit upon" 'Indian style' and kept saying secret words:"Hi,ho,inny, miny, ki,ki,upm,pa,la,cawawa".
ReplyDeleteI own a tv! I only get 3 channels though out here in the sticks.
ReplyDeleteTHAT "anonymous" could ONLY be Dave. He is the one who tortured me throughout my childhood, mocking my favorite things. And if he doesn't remember watching the 3 Stooges.....so be it!
ReplyDeleteWhat are "sit upons". Were they legal in the 50's?
