This is a reminder not to buy purebred cats and dogs with or without papers. I know as fact from the mouth of a breeder that they dispose of kittens and puppies in "free to good home" ads simply because the animals don't fit the criteria as a "show" animal. They may also sell them as purebreeds anyway without papers. This is turn contributes to our pet over-population problem.
Another way cats and dogs end up in shelters are because of so-called "back yard breeders." These are ordinary people who breed pets for profit, sometimes in deplorable conditions. When rescued by authorities these animals can end up in shelters. You can educate yourself more about this at this link:
