Cigarette-Nasty

I've been researching moving companies. My friend, Dennis, told me that he used moving companies twice when moving cross country. He said that it was easy, and that he had no problems with the moving companies that he used. He also said that he might have been lucky. I don't know, I don't really want to count on luck. So here are some of the complaints I've seen in reviews.

  • "This company, Name withheld, let's just say, is a piss pot."
  • "I find it hard to believe that only our most valuable items were 'accidentally' lost."
  • "They loaded our boxes marked fragile at the bottom of 15' stacks where they were immediately crushed!"
  • "The driver was drunk. He reeked of booze and cigarette-nasty."
  • "I have video of my resin Disney statues, showing Name withheld workers unwrapping broken statutes that Name withheld 'professionally' packed."

One thing I noticed in many, many reviews is that the actual cost of the move almost always exceeds the original estimate, and by a lot. So now I am going to look into renting a one way truck from U-Haul or someplace like that. I'll hire some cheap labor (lot's of it here in Florida) to load it, hitch the car up to it on one of those towing devices, and we will move ourselves at half the cost. What could go wrong? The only problem I can see with this plan is Mark. He can't even parallel park the PT Cruiser.

  1. I rented a huge truck and trailer with Buick Park avenue and a cat. I was fine until I blew a rod in the engine in Orlando. Took 4 hours for huge tow truck and got new one. Dropped it off in Tinley. Besides that We took our time and drive slow through mountains of Tennessee.

  2. I'm only moving to the next town over, but I got one of the "Pack-Rat" pod things. The Pod ones were way too expensive but the Pack-Rat one is almost half as much. The guy was very nice, plunked it in the yard and leveled it out. When we finally move, they come back and truck it to where you're going. U can buy insurance on it too. They drop the container where you move to and you can take your time emptying it. They charge a monthly fee and by distance. You should check it out. Good Luck!

    1. I looked up the reviews on all the pod companies here in Florida. They all were horror stories, worse than the long distance movers.

  3. I moved to New Jersey from Texas with my girlfriend at the time. We rented an 18 wheeler and did it ourselves. It was like Smokey and the Bandit. She drove her Honda Accord and I drove the truck. We did fine and paid a couple of giant guys to haul boxes after they delivered a washer and dryer. Once you get to Chicago, ask a couple of firemen or cops to move boxes on their day off. Cash, lunch and beer go a long way. Good luck!

    1. You drove the 18 wheeler? You have a commercial license? Hmmm... what are you doing around June 18th?

  4. I honestly don't remember how many wheels it had, but it was big enough that people got the hell out of my way on the highway. I'd be happy to visit Chicago...I have a very good friend there that I miss.
